Focusing on strategies for using technology to enhance teaching, students will develop an understanding of how to navigate technological content for planning purposes as well as how to author technological content that engages K-12 students in the learning process.
REQUIRED READING
All required readings will be provided by the professor digitally throughout the semester.
COURSE GOALS
•Examine the research and theory behind integrating technology into educational settings.

•Explore new ways to teach traditional academic skills and content through innovative digital technologies.

•Design instructional methods around solving 21st century problems that we face in American schools.

•Examine ethical practices related to digital media and social networking.

•Discover ways in which web-based technologies support educational collaboration.

•Unpack the various advantages and challenges that technology brings to educational environments.

•Examine case studies where teachers are using technology in new and innovative ways to teach students 21st century skills.

•Use computer-based applications “apps” to create presentations that demonstrate the communicative power of the internet.
EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to come to class fully prepared to discuss assigned readings, videos, podcasts, web reviews and assignments. In addition, students are expected to participate in projects and discussions and to submit written assignments as well web crafted projects as noted. Students are required to have access to high speed internet connections in order to research, develop, design and create presentations. Some classes will meet at night and online. Students are expected to attend those classes when they do not directly conflict with another course meeting times.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
superbetter.jpg

1. Superbetter (20%)
Superbetter is a game that we are going to play both during class and as homework. It is online. It is free and easy. But, it takes time.
You must:
•create an account
•build at least ten power-ups
•choose an epic win
•design at least 5 bad guys
•make three quests
•post activity updates daily
•become allies with at least three classmates
•make 5 future boosts
•create a secret identity
•write a 1-2 page paper on how this game might be used in a specific educational setting;
due last day of semester.

On the last day of class, in May, you have to give a five minute presentation to the class about your experience with the game. You will be graded based 50% on the score you get on the game (500 points=100%), 25% on your oral presentation and 25% on your 1-2 page paper.

OPTION: Instead of writing and presenting on Superbetter, you can write and talk about what you learned about teaching from differencemakers. The question is this:
What skills and knowledge did I learn from participating in differencemarkers that I can apply to teaching?
Here is how it will be graded:
25% On what skills we have learned from Difference Makers
15% On what we have learned about ourselves during Difference Makers (i.e. I am not a good public speaker when I make a script)
10% What we liked and what we did not like about Difference Makers. Suggestions on how the experience could have been better.
30% How can the skills and experience from Difference Makers be applied to teaching
20% Presentation on what you have learned about yourself from Difference Makers, the skills you have learned, and how can the skills and your experience in Difference Makers be applied to teaching.

It too should be 1-2 pages, but it's ok if it goes to 3.

2. DifferenceMaker Challenege (20%) Every student will participate in the DifferencMaker Challenge. You will have to join a DM team, explore an educationalproblem you want to solve, using technology. Then, you will research possible solutions to that problem, design a sustainable solution (mechanical or systematic) to the problem and then pitch that solution to a panel of judges.
This activity tests your ability to collaborate, lead, follow, organize, communicate, create, think critically, tolerate failure, use technology, innovate solutions, focus attention, speak publicly and to think entrepreneurially. Various required workshops and coaching sessions as well as competitions will be part of this project. There will be at least four nights when you will be required to attend events of workshops. Your attendance at these events is required and class will not meet on those days. Your grade on this activity will be based on:
•How well you worked as a team.
•The quality of your application.
•Your attendance and participation in the workshops and competition.
•The quality of your pitch.
•The relevance of your idea to education and technology.
•Your ability to meet deadlines.

Then there will be 5 minutes for a discussion. Be prepared to use the technology you are demonstrating in your presentation. TECHNO FAILURES will RARELY be excused! So rehearse and have backups.
Your grade on this activity will be based on:
•Your ability to demonstrate the APP’s educational use effectively.
•The quality of your presentation.
•Your knowledge of the application.
•Your use of technology to present.

Each pair or group will choose from this list of APPS:

4. Portfolio (20%) Each student will create a portfolio that exhibits what he or she learned in this course about using technology in the classroom. It will involve technology like prezi, Powerpoint, glogster or some other web 2.0 tool. It must be between 5-10 minutes long. And it will include grammatically correct text, high quality video, relevant images and content that ties technology to teaching. You will have to present your portfolio to the class. TECHNO FAILURES will RARELY be excused! So rehearse and have backups. Plan Bs are highly recommended.

•Your knowledge of the content of this course.
•Your use of technology to present.
•Your ability to speak clearly and pace yourself appropriately in an engaging way.

Students are expected to ask questions about teaching, about the readings and to share their thoughts and feelings about teaching and technology. When engaging in group-work, all members must participate fully. Students are expected to either logoff or turn their monitors off during presentations, guest speakers, lectures or discussions. Failure to do so may affect the participation portion of your grade. Students are expected to watch all assigned videos.
